Visoning
By Arlene Hylton
The Life Visioning Process or Visioning as taught to me by my spiritual teacher Rev. Michael Bernard Beckwith has been a vital part in my work at Agape and in the world at large. I have visioned with hundreds of people at the beginning of my fasting program I’m Keeping True.
I find visioning a way for individuals to capture God’s idea for their life rather than the ego’s idea of their life. Visioning has been used for individuals to capture the vision of what a powerful and successful life they can live. When we practice visioning, we open up beyond ideas of what we can imagine or visualize, and let the divine idea- the vision- for our lives to come forward.
In January of each year, Agape’s teens, young adults, and I vision for the fulfillment of that year, and each individual writes his/her vision in a letter. They then give their letters to me. The next year, I return the letters to them and they are reminded of that for which they visioned. Many of them are ecstatic about the fulfillment of their vision. This is how impactful visioning is. Some teens, if they could not make it the following year, have sent their mother or family members to pick up their letters.
Lastly, as each woman enters the treatment center of which I am the director, we vision for her stay. Then, when she is leaving the treatment center, we vision for the next phase of her life. This powerful tool of Life Visioning has given our youth, young adults, and me much insight on the fulfillment of God’s ideas. I also believe that year-after-year the visioning process supports me in continuing my work at Agape and in the world at large.
The Practice
Today, spend some time in meditation. Once you feel centered and clear, remember a time in your life when you felt unconditionally loved. If you can’t think of a time in your life when you felt fully loved, imagine what that would feel like. Then ask a question- “What is the divine idea for my life?” Listen. Be patient. You may get symbols, imagery, words, a feeling tone, colors. Don’t judge it. Don’t edit. Be open and witness what comes forward. Sometimes nothing comes right away. You may get information later in the day. Just be open and mindful. Journal your experience.
If you have Rev. Michael’s Life Visioning book, you can refer to the Visioning Process to vision for any area of your life you would like to see change.
